Conceived and composed by Portuguese pianist Daniel Bernardes, the project reimagines Bach’s legacy through the lens of polytemporality, phasing, and musical collage — blending baroque fragments, modern improvisation, and fresh harmonic invention. Far from a traditional tribute, and further still from a reinterpretation through the jazz lens, the new music emerges as a true recomposition and recombines Bach’s materials with techniques borrowed from visual arts. The album was commissioned by the Around Classic festival and features the newly formed Quodlibet Quintet, composed of five of the most prominent figures in Portuguese jazz: Daniel Bernardes (piano, composition), Ricardo Toscano (alto saxophone, clarinet), João Barradas (accordion), Demian Cabaud (double bass) and Joel Silva (drums). A fresh addition to the Artway Records catalogue, BACH is a bold new step in the ongoing conversation between classical and jazz traditions — a field in which Daniel Bernardes has consistently excelled throughout his career.

The new album by Portuguese composer António Pinho Vargas brings together two landmark works, performed live by Casa da Música’s resident ensembles. Six Portraits of Pain was one of the highlights of the venue’s inaugural programme in 2005, featuring the virtuoso cellist Anssi Karttunen as soloist alongside the Remix Ensemble, conducted by Frank Ollu. Some will most likely be recalled to some advertisement, others to some cinematic passage, and others to a given historical moment. This work is part of a set of six Suites for cello, a pioneering collection in the field of repertoire for solo cello that requires a great diversity of technical resources of the instrument, explored throughout the different movements, and which, as a whole, ends up constituting in itself a compendium for cello technique. These pages of complex delicacy are brought to life in this recording by Portuguese cellist Filipe Quaresma, with the sensitivity and knowledge of an artist who deeply knows this repertoire — the result of an already intense and wide-ranging career, distinguished by his specialization in different repertoires. The cello recorded here is an instrument built by the Italian luthier Domenico Montagnana (1686–1750) — interestingly, just one year younger than J. S. Bach and who died in the same year as the composer — a contemporary of the music in question. Some of the Fugues had already been written separately before 2018, but they were waiting for an opportunity to put them together in some way, and I even initially thought of a small notebook with just a few isolated fugues, without the preludes, and without a tonal logic. When, however, I gathered and reviewed them with a view to this edition, adding the respective Preludes, I quickly realized that they were all written in different keys. So, having already completed 5 or 6 Fugues and knowing that until today no one in Portugal and, I believe, in the Iberian Peninsula, had written a complete cycle of 24 Preludes and Fugues in all the major and minor keys, I decided to compose the remaining pieces. The Fugues are quite free from a formal point of view and are very close to the old forms that precede the modern fugue, namely the Tento, the Ricercare, or the polyphonic Fantasy. Each Fugue, as well as each Prelude, is very different from each other, and the emotional atmosphere of the pieces ranges from Arcadian serenity to tragic drama. In fact, the cycle begins exhilaratingly and ends on a note of apprehension with the end of Fugue 24 which, although written on a challenging and decided theme, which closes the cycle in a brutal and definitive way, still fails to “clean up” the dark suggestions that it creates throughout its polyphonic journey, shadows that end up dominating the various bright “fanfares” in “stretto” that characterize the central section of Fugue 24.

Sérgio
