About
The new album BACH by Quodlibet Quintet bridges the timeless world of Johann Sebastian Bach with the ever-evolving language of contemporary jazz. Conceived and composed by Portuguese pianist Daniel Bernardes, the project reimagines Bach’s legacy through the lens of polytemporality, phasing, and musical collage — blending baroque fragments, modern improvisation, and fresh harmonic invention. Far from a traditional tribute, and further still from a reinterpretation through the jazz lens, the new music emerges as a true recomposition and recombines Bach’s materials with techniques borrowed from visual arts. The album was commissioned by the Around Classic festival and features the newly formed Quodlibet Quintet, composed of five of the most prominent figures in Portuguese jazz: Daniel Bernardes (piano, composition), Ricardo Toscano (alto saxophone, clarinet), João Barradas (accordion), Demian Cabaud (double bass) and Joel Silva (drums). A fresh addition to the Artway Records catalogue, BACH is a bold new step in the ongoing conversation between classical and jazz traditions — a field in which Daniel Bernardes has consistently excelled throughout his career.
