About
The Space Within is the new album from accordionist João Barradas, forthcoming on the Artway Next label. It captures a magnificent encounter between the Portuguese virtuoso and the prestigious German orchestra, the Symphoniker Hamburg, conducted by Sylvain Cambreling. A career distinguished by its global reach and boundless versatility, spanning classical, improvisation, and jazz, leads Barradas to pose an ambitious question: what if Mozart had written a concerto for accordion and orchestra? In his own transcription of Piano Concerto No. 23, the demand is for more than virtuosic fireworks; it requires the soloist to immerse deeply in dialogue with the orchestra and to convey profound emotion. These challenges are met triumphantly in this recording with a world-class ensemble. Alongside this reinvented classic, they perform Toshio Hosokawa’s Voyage IV – Extasis, a work conceived specifically for accordion and orchestra. Expressed with a rare musical sensuality, the piece evokes the ancient, meditative sound of the traditional Japanese mouth organ, the shō.
